About the job

Position: Executive Director
Location: Lansing, MI (Hybrid position with occasional travel)
Reports to: Board of Directors
Salary Range: $80,000 – $95,000

Position Summary
We’re looking for a leader looking for a purposeful career shift—someone with a strong business background who wants to make a meaningful impact in an environment focused on the greater good, not just financial success.

The Executive Director (ED) reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of LMB. This includes staff management, program oversight, fundraising, and ensuring the execution of the organization’s mission. The ED will play a pivotal role in expanding LMB’s reach, increasing funding, and advocating for bicycle-friendly policies across Michigan. They will lead with vision, partnering with staff, board members, policymakers, donors, members, and the broader cycling community to advance LMB’s goals.

This role is ideal for a visionary leader with a background in for-profit business who is seeking a moral shift—someone looking to make a meaningful impact in an organization focused on social good rather than profit. Grant writing experience is a requirement.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Management

  • Engage and energize board members, volunteers, event committees, members, funders, and community partners.
  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors, serving as an ex-officio member on all committees.
    Lead the staff and contractors, fostering a high-performance, mission-driven team focused on operational excellence.
  • Ensure programmatic excellence, creative development of new programs, and rigorous evaluation and improvement across all areas, including finance, administration, advocacy, fundraising, and communications.

Advocacy & Public Policy

  • Serve as the lead advocate for statewide bicycling policies, collaborating with lawmakers and public agencies to promote safer cycling awareness, infrastructure, and legislation.
  • Build coalitions and partnerships with transportation planners, public officials, and community groups to advance bicycle-friendly policies.
  • Develop and implement advocacy strategies in alignment with LMB’s mission and priorities.

Strategic Growth & Program Development

  • Lead the development and execution of a multi-year strategic plan to expand LMB’s impact across the state.
  • Identify opportunities for program refinement and expansion, such as community outreach, bicycle safety education, and legislative initiatives.
  • Build partnerships with community leaders, municipalities, and businesses to foster local and regional bicycling initiatives.

Fundraising & Communications

  • Expand revenue-generating activities, including growing membership, tour revenue, sponsorships, fundraising campaigns, and corporate partnerships.
  • Cultivate relationships with donors, stakeholders, and community organizations to support fundraising and advocacy efforts.
  • Strengthen LMB’s brand and public presence through strategic marketing, public relations, and digital engagement.

Financial & Organizational Management

  • Ensure financial sustainability by diversifying revenue streams, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit regulations.
  • Develop and oversee annual budgets, financial reports, and grant compliance.
  • Improve internal processes and technology to enhance operational efficiency.

Qualifications and Attributes

  • Grant Writing: Proven experience in successful grant writing and securing funding is a must.
  • Leadership & Management: 10+ years in a senior leadership role with a track record of scaling organizations and leading high-performing teams is preferred.
  • Fundraising & Development: Experience in donor cultivation, corporate partnerships, sponsorships, and membership growth.
  • Advocacy & Public Policy: Understanding of legislative processes and experience with advocacy initiatives.
  • Financial & Operational Acumen: Expertise in managing budgets, financial reporting, and nonprofit compliance.
  • Public Engagement & Communications: Strong written and verbal communication skills, public speaking, and relationship-building experience.

Other Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with bicycling, transportation equity, environmental sustainability and transportation policies.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors and managing staff-driven initiatives.
  • Commitment to diversity.
