Every item below started as a bill nobody expected to pass. Michigan riders changed that.
Make Speed Limits Safer (2024) — Only passed in the House, a victory but the work is not done yet. It would allow communities to lower a speed limit on safety grounds, instead of being bound to the 85th-percentile rule.
Distracted Driving — Michigan’s “Hands Free” Law (2023) — Since June 30, 2023, Michigan drivers cannot hold a phone behind the wheel.
Safe Passing Law (2018) — Michigan drivers must leave at least three feet when passing a cyclist.
Bicycle Safety in Driver’s Education (2018) — Every Michigan driver’s ed student now spends at least an hour on the laws protecting cyclists, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
Obstructed License Plates (2018) — A bike rack on the back of your car is no longer grounds for a traffic stop.
E-Bikes (2017) — Michigan’s three-class system defines e-bikes as bicycles rather than motor vehicles, and sets where each class can ride. This is under pressure due to the proliferation of electric motorcycles marketed as e-bikes.
