Bicycling in Michigan Is for Everyone

LMB believes riding a bicycle is for everyone. Riders belong on Michigan’s roads and trails. Safety and access are the core of our purpose, and that purpose covers every rider.

Our Commitment

The League of Michigan Bicyclists does not discriminate. We welcome every person, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, body size, marital status, or military status. The same is true for any other characteristic protected under Michigan or federal law. This applies to everyone in our organization — board, staff, contractors, volunteers, vendors, and members. It applies to every program, service, and activity we offer.

One Community, Many Reasons

Everyone rides for different reasons. Some commute. Some train. Others ride for fun. Some ride because a bike is their transportation. Others race. Many ride for multiple reasons. Riders come from every background, age, and ability level.

Barriers to Riding

Barriers are real, and research on cycling backs that up. Safety is the most common one — real and perceived risk from traffic keeps people off bikes. Missing bike lanes and trails are next. Cost of a bike and gear shuts other riders out. New and returning riders often lack the skills or confidence to feel safe on the road. And for some, physical ability limits what a standard bike can do. These barriers don’t land on everyone the same way — where you live, what you can afford, and what your body can do all play a part. LMB advocates and educates to address these barriers, and we partner with organizations that support riders directly.

How We Unify, Advocate, and Educate

Here’s how each pillar shows up in this work:

  • UNIFY. We partner with organizations that make bikes and gear more accessible, and we support adaptive cycling alongside organizations serving riders of every ability.
  • ADVOCATE. We advocate in Lansing for safer roads and stronger protections for riders, and we push for bike lanes, trails, and connected infrastructure across Michigan.
  • EDUCATE. We have presented skills clinics for riders, run a program for law enforcement, and we have sponsored youth cycling education.

Ride Together, One Voice

Every rider who joins us, rides with us, or speaks up with us is choosing to unify with cyclists across Michigan. This is a key pillar of LMB’s strategy and mission. Read more →
