Sunrise Adventure 2017 Recap

June 21, 2017

Our Sunrise Adventure Tour wrapped up last weekend in the inviting city of Alpena, and was a success. Over the June 15-18 weekend, a total of 135 riders joined us, including six locals from Alpena and the furthest rider coming from from Marietta, Georgia.

Cyclists chose from several routes of different lengths that lead them past historic lighthouses and down forested roads. Among the fantastic cycling routes, there were also a variety of staple activities for riders to see what Alpena had to offer. As in years past, cyclists enjoyed a glass-bottom boat cruise to see some of the 200 shipwrecks lying just off the Lake Huron coast. Some kayaked the beautiful inland waters of Thunder Bay River. Others simply rested in the peaceful downtown of Alpena.

A favorite attraction among riders was the Maplewood Tavern, where the Guinness World Record’s longest serving bartender is still pouring brews for our cyclists. Clarice Grenkowicz is 98 as has been doing her job for 77 years straight. Everyone enjoyed her services after long rides under the summer heat.

For a number of years, LMB has given a portion of the proceeds for the Sunrise Adventure Tour to the City of Alpena. This year, riders were able to check out a new bicycle repair station and pump by the North Eastern State Trail (NEST) trailhead that was funded in part by the Sunrise proceeds.

Our volunteers worked hard to give our cyclists a seamless ride along Hubbard Lake as well as other fantastic sights within the city. The backdrop was beautiful as cyclists rode past rich farm lands and thick woodlands. By the time riders got to their final destination, they weren’t quite ready to say goodbye to the scenery nor the fantastic weekend they had.

The Sunrise Adventure provided fun for the entire family; it was a joy to see the bicycling community, from ages six to 86 years old, join together to share a weekend savoring Michigan.
