Unmasking Brain Injury: Stories Behind the Ride

May 29, 2026

Lansing local Oren Kennedy recently shared an impactful project, Unmasking Brain Injury, an art initiative featuring masks created by individuals living with traumatic brain injuries. As he explored the collection, Oren noticed a number of stories tied to bike-vehicle crashes, powerful reminders of the real people behind the statistics.

Oren, a member of the Brain Injury Association of Michigan, is now working to gather and highlight Michigan-based stories within the project. The artwork and personal narratives offer a meaningful look at the lasting impact of crashes—and why safer streets matter.

It’s also a reminder of the importance of policies that protect people who bike, walk, and roll like Michigan’s Vulnerable Road User (VRU) bills, which are nearing crossing the finish line and becoming law. If you haven’t already, consider reaching out to your legislator and urge them to support and pass these bills.
