Over 170 riders joined together to cycle across Michigan’s Eastern, Upper Peninsula on July 9-15 during our Michigan Upper Peninsula Tour, known as the MUP Tour.
Riders who participated were aged seven years old to 82 years young and came from 27 other states.
The tour began in St.Ignace, MI, with a free-day that gave riders a chance to plan their own adventures on their first day in the U.P. Many took a ferry to Mackinaw Island, famous for its car-free environment. Among the many sites was the majestic Mackinac Bridge, know as “The Mighty Mac”. The next day, riders departed and followed a relatively flat route to MUP’s next stop in Newberry. Riders conquered 68 miles on their first day.
The route from Newberry to the next city began with a delicious stop at North Star Bakery, an off-the-grid, non electric establishment with large amounts of coffee to fuel riders for their journey to Tequamenon Falls State Park. The only Microbrewery to be located on State Park grounds, Tequamenon Falls Brewery and Pub, even agreed to open early for riders to stop for lunch.
The riders eventually made it to Paradise, where they also had the option to ride another 10 miles to Whitefish Point where they were able to check out the area’s lighthouse museum.
After spending a night in Paradise, cyclists adventured to Sault St. Marie. Riders spent two nights “in the Soo” and enjoyed a rest day where they enjoyed the bustling town or simply just recuperated.
From here, cyclist rode to De Tour, a quaint village where the local library hosted a well-deserved movie night prepared for them.
The last leg of MUP was back to St. Ignace where everyone left with smiling faces, some even deciding to extent their day with an extra 20 mile ride before heading home.
Despite the rainy weather during the week, MUP riders had an amazing time. The Upper Peninsula again dazzled with breathtaking views and served up fun for the entire family.
Thank you again to the amazing volunteers and cyclists who came out to make this year’s MUP another to remember!
