Application window for the 2023 Better Bicycling Grants now closed.
Who should apply? In the past, we’ve had applications from libraries, “friends of” parks and trail organizations, other nonprofits, municipalities, bike clubs, and bike shops. This list isn’t exhaustive, so if you have a great idea and want to know if you’d qualify, reach out and ask!
How much can I apply for? We consider grant applications up to $2,500. If you’re applying for equipment (such as a bike fix-it station) the limit is $500.
What kind of projects do you fund? Read through our past awardees below to get a feel for the kind of projects we fund. We love to hear what you’re working on and we award a pretty broad range of programs. We look for grantees to fit into one of these categories:
- Innovation – trying something that’s never been done before
- Equity – making bike transportation fair and accessible for all
- Safety – reducing bicyclist injuries and deaths
- Sustainability – reducing air pollution and carbon emissions through cycling
- Education – training cyclists or drivers in best practices
- Advocacy – convincing decision-makers to prioritize bicyclist safety
- Infrastructure – constructing or improving physical assets that make bicycling better
- Encouragement – increasing ridership, especially for underserved communities

The application window for the 2023 Better Bicycling Grants is now closed, but stay tuned for info to come on the next round of grants. Better Bicycling funds are open to all Michigan 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Individuals, clubs, or other entities without an official 501(c)(3) designation will be considered if accompanied by a fiscal sponsorship agreement with an established nonprofit. Grant applications from LMB members are given highest priority. Grants must be applied for in advance of the opportunity. Retroactive requests will not be accepted.
