Building Bikes, Building Leaders: Leadership Oakland’s Cornerstone Retreat

We are thrilled to share that LMB’s Data Analyst, Anu Jawanda, was accepted into the prestigious Leadership Oakland Cornerstone Program earlier this year.

The Leadership Oakland Cornerstone Program is a competitive, 9-month initiative that brings together 50 emerging leaders to explore and address key issues affecting the Oakland County region. Participants engage in monthly, in-depth sessions covering a wide range of topics, including education, government, justice, health and human services, and race and ethnic diversity. Each session is led by experts, providing both an in-depth look at the challenges and opportunities facing the community.

Anu recently attended the program’s first event of the year—a 2 1/2 day retreat at the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center in Roscommon, Michigan. The retreat allowed participants to connect, understand the program’s scope, and explore their personal leadership strengths and areas for growth.

A highlight of the retreat was a bike-building session in partnership with Foster Love, a non-profit supporting foster children. The Leadership Oakland Class of LOXXXV worked together to assemble 10 bikes, which will be donated to foster youth through Ana’s Treasures, a local non-profit thrift store organization. The effort not only fostered teamwork but also provided much-needed resources for children in Michigan’s foster care system.

We’re incredibly proud of Anu and can’t wait to see all she accomplishes through this program!
