This year, Carlos Esquivel, founder of Vívela, was the deserving recipient of LMB’s 2023 Ralph Finneren Encouragement Award at our Annual Awards ceremony. Vívela is a Latino cycling nonprofit organization that encourages cycling to improve holistic well-being. Vívela offers introductory cycling experiences to the West Michigan Latino community and provides opportunities to further develop skill and fitness. By introducing his community to cycling and encouraging cyclists of all abilities, Carlos is bringing a sense of diversity and accessibility to the sport. By providing access to bicycles and equipment to those that may be deterred from riding due to barriers like cost and providing a pathway for new cyclists to build fitness through the developmental team program, he leads by example of how cycling opens doors in many ways.
