Portage, MI — Have you ever looked down a quiet street and wondered, what’s down there? Portage resident and longtime cyclist Allan Macaulay didn’t just wonder, he went out and rode every single street in the entire City of Portage. Yup. All of them.
What started in February 2024 wrapped up triumphantly in April 2025, with Allan logging about 150 miles of city streets in total. His inspiration? A rider in Ann Arbor who did the same thing. “I figured, why not?” Allan said. Spoken like a true adventurer.
Using Strava to track his routes and a city map to visualize his progress, Allan methodically checked off neighborhood after neighborhood with no major mishaps, just some areas that were trickier than others. His favorite part of town to ride? Home sweet home: the Amberly neighborhood.
This isn’t Allan’s first rodeo, either. He’s biked the Allegheny Passage from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, regularly rides from Kalamazoo to South Haven on the Kal-Haven Trail, and has logged plenty of commuting miles from his days biking to work. He’s also conquered the Pere Marquette Rail Trail from Reed City to Clare.
A proud Yooper by birth and a Michigan State alum, Allan has been biking since childhood and never stopped exploring. His trusty Jamis Renegade held up without a hitch—no flats, no broken chains. He shared that he always wears a helmet when riding.
We’re grateful to LMB member Dick Hewitt for spotlighting Allan’s journey and we hope it inspires you to take the scenic route, turn down that side street, and just ride.
