Blocking bike lanes with parked cars forces cyclists into traffic, creating unsafe conditions—stronger enforcement and clearer regulations are needed to keep bike lanes open and riders safe.

Two crucial bicycle safety provisions, door opening (“dooring”) and bike lane parking restrictions, should be moved from the Michigan Uniform Traffic Code (UTC) into the Michigan Compiled Laws (MCL). These changes would create uniform, enforceable protections for bicyclists across all Michigan communities, helping to prevent collisions, improve traffic safety, and ensure consistent application of the law statewide.

We’re taking this issue up with our Senators and Representatives at our Bicycle & Trail and Advocacy Day in May! Join us so you can, too. Stay tuned for more information and a pre-Advocacy Day webinar going over Bike Lane Parking along with each of the other crucial safety issues we’ll be advocating for.
