Help LMB Spread the Word on Bike Safety

June 2, 2026

During Bike Month in May, LMB launched a statewide bike safety campaign across radio and digital platforms to help raise awareness around safer driving behaviors, bicycle safety laws, and the importance of sharing the road. Supported by the Equitable Transportation Fund — a project of Global Philanthropy Partnership, the campaign is designed to reach people across Michigan with clear, accessible messages that encourage safer interactions between drivers and vulnerable road users. At the center of this effort is an actionable message to drivers: Eyes up. Phone down. Leave at least 3 feet when passing a bicyclist. It’s straightforward for a reason. Small actions behind the wheel can have a big impact.

Michigan sees over 1,500 bicycle-related crashes each year. Many of these incidents are preventable with greater awareness, attention, and understanding of the laws designed to protect people on our roads. Michigan law requires drivers to give at least three feet of space when passing a bicyclist. In some communities, that distance increases to five feet. Pair that with hands-free driving laws, and the path to safer interactions becomes clear.

Why This Matters Beyond the Road

This campaign isn’t just about avoiding crashes. It’s about creating the conditions where more people feel safe choosing to ride a bike. Safer streets don’t just protect people, they support healthier, more connected, and more climate-friendly communities across Michigan.

Help Spread the Word on Bike Safety

We also know this message travels further when communities help carry it. To make that easy, we created a partner toolkit with ready-to-share graphics, videos, messaging, and resources. Whether you share a social post, include the campaign in your newsletter, reach out to local media, email your community, or simply start conversations about safer streets, every effort helps amplify the message.

Many thanks to the generous support of Ann Arbor Velo Club, Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society, GoLivCo-Horal Family Foundation, Friends of the Lansing Regional Trails, Michiana Bicycle Association, Genesee Wanderers Cycling Club, Metro 313 Cyclones, Clinton River Riders, Cadieux Bicycle Club, Patrick Meehan, and Michael Hartrick, and TCBA/DALMAC as well as a couple anonymous donors, we’re able to continue running this campaign beyond Bike Month and keep these important safety messages out in communities statewide.
